Boston Chancellor Keith Motley, Plenary Panel, Philip Johnston, and Award to
U.S. Sen. Edward M Kennedy, & Special Publication Release

The Massachusetts Association for Community Action (MASSCAP) along with the Center for Social Policy of UMass Boston is sponsoring a symposium to mark the 40th anniversary of federal legislation creating community action programs to serve the needs of low-income families and the community.

New areas of policy and programming for the 21st century will be examined at a symposium to celebrate 40 years of helping low-income and working people achieve self-sufficiency. The gathering will be held November 18, 2004, from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm at the new Campus Center, University of Massachusetts Boston.

Prior to the symposium start there will be a press conference at 9:00 am in the UMass Boston Campus Center 3rd Floor Founders Room announcing the release of the Special Issue of the New England Journal For Public Affairs: "The War On Poverty: 40 Years Later".

The gathering is open to the public with a ticket and will feature:
  • A Special Lifetime of Support & Service Award to U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy; the award will be accepted by Philip Johnston, Chair, Mass. Democratic Party
  • Remarks by Hubie Jones and U.S. Representative Barney Frank
  • The release of a special edition of the New England Journal of Public Policy on community action (published by the McCormack Graduate School)
  • A moderated plenary panel on new approaches to servicing vulnerable people
Tickets are $75 and include lite breakfast fare, full lunch, and copy of the special issue of the New England Journal of Public Affairs.

The Center for Social Policy, at the McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies, University of Massachusetts Boston, engages in applied research aimed at addressing social and economic inequalities in Massachusetts, New England and across the country.
