The Center worked with UMass Boston staffer Sergio Goncalves to create in 2004 the Empower Disabled Fund, a campus and community organization that gives honorary grants to UMass Boston students with disability. In May, 2006 the fund was able to provide a new wheelchair-equipped van to student Eugene Flaherty, thanks to fundraising efforts spearheaded by community leader William Thorndike and parishioners at Trinity Church in Boston. In September, 2006 the EDF raffled off a new Toyota Corolla donated by Robert Boch of Expressway Motors, to raise funds for future grants.
